Obtaining spanish nationality for jewish descendants

The deadline for the submission of applications for Spanish nationality pursuant to Law 12/2015 of June 24, regarding the granting of Spanish nationality to Sephardim originating in Spain, ended last October 1, 2019, and in September 2021 the deadline (extended by the COVID 19 pandemic) for providing new documents to the files that were still open on the electronic platform of the General Council of Notaries ended definitively in September 2021. Since that date, the platform has been blocked and it is no longer possible to make changes or provide new documents. The only option that is still available is the selection of a notary in the event that none has yet been assigned.

What is the current status of those applications for Spanish nationality that have already been initiated and are still incomplete or in process?

If you have made your application for nationality on time, but you have not been able to leave all the documentation on the electronic platform before it was blocked, please contact us, as it is possible that we can correct and complete such applications.

If you need to organize and schedule the signing of your notoriety certificate, it is very important to previously choose a notary who is familiar with the process and who expressly consents to the signing of the file. Our advice is that the review by the notary should always be done prior to the assignment of the notary in the electronic platform.   

If you already have a notary assigned but you are unable to communicate with him, he ignores your messages or refuses to sign the deed alleging defects in the procedure or other reasons, you may have to initiate a process of change of notary office.

If 15 months have passed since the signing of the notary deed and you have not heard from the Spanish administration, it is important that you take the initiative. DO NOT let your file fall into an administrative silence that could be indefinite, or negative. There are legal tools that can allow you to take advantage of this administrative silence and secure your right to nationality.
